Nine Frame Analysis (Maisie Walker)

Picture one:
This is the Lionsgate logo which is the company which Co-Produced The Blair Witch Project. This is a typical convention for many horror films or any films in general. The logos are usually at the beginning to attract audiences, for example, if some people enjoy films from Lionsgate they will continue to watch the film.

Picture two:
This is another logo for a film company which isn't as well known. This is also a promotion for the company and, as it is on a black screen, it links to the overall theme and genre of the film which is horror and mystery.

Picture three:
this is the title of the film which is on a black screen and white, small writing saying "The Blair Witch Project" this, again, links to the theme and genre of the film. The fact that the writing is small seems like it wouldn't be significant however, the black screen exaggerates the focus of the film and makes it seem more important. I want to use this text in our film because it is eerie and mysterious which is the particular vibe we wanted to give off with our film.

Picture Four:
This is text giving an overall summary of what happened as if the film was found and it is in the past tense. This is engaging because it foreshadows that something is going to happen to the students within the film. The fact that it says "a year later their footage was found" signifies that the students wee not found however the footage was which creates mystery for the audience and makes them feel on edge even before the film has started.

Picture Five:
Quite immediately, it goes straight to the footage which was found. This is introducing the characters-firstly it is the girl who is showing the camera what she is bringing with her on her trip. The girl looks rather tired and scared which also foreshadows that something bad is going to happen to her in the woods on their trip.

Picture Six:
This picture is a book which the girl is taking on her trip, this is "How To Survive In The Woods" which again foreshadows that they will no survive in the woods. Additionally, it gives of a feeling that she is scared and may be the most vulnerable within the film. The fact that she is the first person shown gives the impression that she is the main character and is the most important within the film.
The book shows that she worries about the woods and needs to be secure with knowledge before she goes into the woods. The book is also over the top of a dark screen sticking to the overall theme of the film.

Picture Seven:
This is a picture of another character with a professional camera to film with. This introduces a new character however also shows that he will be doing all of the filming suggesting that he may be the last one to die if he is the only one filming throughout.

Picture Eight:
Quite swiftly, there is an editing technique used which is black and white. This is used very randomly as none of the other shots are filmed with the black and white effect. This suggests that this girl within the film is very vulnerable as well as the first girl shown within the film. The black and white is a signature convention for a horror films as it makes it mysterious and eerie. I want to use the black and white effect in our film because I feel as if it gives off a better effect and follows the conventions of a typical horror film.

Picture Nine:
Finally, this clip of the new character which is a large man/young adult. He is told to say bye to his mother which suggests that something bad is going to happen to him within the film and he will never be able to see his mum again. This is a good technique because you almost feel bad for the character before anything happens to him because it is so blatantly foreshadowed. In terms of the look of the clip, the camera isn't the best quality and is done all through Point of View shots which may make the film difficult to see throughout.

Equipment List (Maisie Walker)

What equipment is going to be used?
  1. We are using an Iphone to film our film. This is easy to put onto the computer from the phone and the camera is good quality. There are 3 Iphone's which will be used, an Iphone 5c an Iphone 5s and an Iphone 6.
  2. We are using the torch in our piece as well to show the way for the camera as it is within the dark and hard to see. This will improve the quality of the film due to the fact that it wont be so dark.

We are only using a limited amount of equipment to make the project easier to film. This will benefit our group because we will not have to carry around a lot of equipment when filming our scenes.

Planning- Initial Ideas (Maisie Walker, Georgia Skipper, Kennedy Overton)

Brainstorm of ideas...

Thriller, a chase occurs, dark and delirious.
  • This would consist of a girl being chased through the woods, she is scared of what might happen to her, possible bruising and cuts over her body to signify that she has been abused.
  • This will draw audience in as it is a real life possibility and can possibly happen to anyone in the world. This can create relativity and scare the audience more than if it was a film that was not able to happen in real life.

Horror, where a girl wakes up in her bedroom and is in the presence of a ghost.
  • This would be based around Paranormal Activity, the ghost would never be seen however it would scare the audience because it would create the essence of mystery and surprise.
  • This would also include moving objects that were around the room, however the disadvantages of this idea would be the fact that we wouldn't be able to move the objects without being seen and similar films have been put out many times.
Romantic Comedy, where two best friends are in a competition to see who can win the guy.
  • This would be a simple idea based around school and their houses, the boy would be good looking and desirable. However, the draw back with this film again would be the fact that there has already been films like this produced and it would be copying the films. This would not be original and the audience would not enjoy it.

Make-up for Main Task - Georgia Skipper

These are just a few photographs of the prosthetic cuts and bruises I put on Maisie, I have only showed the few that are important to our film, the others will be seen in the film however do not have a big meaning to what happens in our film or the way the character moves or acts.

This is the costume design, made by Georgia Skipper and Kennedy Overton

The cut on her shoulder is the most important for our film, we are using it as a symbol for being bound to her memories, later on in the film it will still appear however healed and as a large scar, we are using it to symbolise the mental destruction and to demonstrate how the memory will always be there and it has left an emotional scar as well as physical.

Planning- Pitch (Maisie Walker, Georgia Skipper and Kennedy Overton)

Pitch

Title- State of Mind
Genre-psychological thriller
Form- 2 Minute opening
Location- the film is set in Medway through different settings. It starts at night in a dark wood and proceeds on to the main characters home.
Time- it starts at night and follows time into day
Characters-
Becca- 17 year old girl
Diane- 46 year old mother
Plot Outline-
Becca was attacked 5 months ago in a wood near her home. The Man who attacked her was never arrested but Becca knows who he is, her attacker was the local shop owner but lack of proof let him walk free and she sees him every day and is living in fear of her past. Her mum is telling her to get over it and it is breaking down their relationship, Becca Is reaching a mental point of no return
Our film consists of vast camera angles such as: point of view, low angle, over the shoulder shots and movements such as panning. We experiment with lighting and sound. Our film has a set costume and makeup design to emphasis the extent of the attack.
Our target audience is ages 15-52 as we feel our film may show explicit images and strong language it also has a strong mental meaning and gore, we feel that this is inappropriate for younger viewers. We also feel that our film reflects predominantly on today’s society and we feel that older audiences may not appreciate this and may feel offended by the strong language and gore.
The appeal of our film is the gritty realism of current society and showing real-life and everyday events on screen. We are showing how specific events can take such a large impact on life and we feel Becca is a character which offers many chances for the audience to connect and emphasize with her. The film also offers a heart breaking story of a girl and the destruction of her life and deterioration of her mind from one man’s actions.
Our film is influenced by taken as it’s a series of events which lacks a moral; it shows how other peoples events cause disruptions in so many. In taken one groups doing of kidnapping young girls caused death of many and mental deterioration of the mother, father and daughter. In our film, one man’s choice to attack and assault a girl causes mental disturbances ending relationships and ruining futures.
Our unique selling point is that our film is linked with rape crisis center (a charity based on offering support to women who been victim of rape, physical assault and mental assault) we worked closely with them and assault victims to offer an honest look into the world of a victim and give knowledge of what is looked over yesterday and the profit will be split 50/50 between us and the charity.
Our roles;
Georgia- Producer, Location Scout, Make-up artist, set, costume design, co-director
Kennedy- storyboard artist, prop design, hair design
Maisie- Editor, actor, music and co-director, Sound Editor, set, technical director
